School sports

Description

Seven sports will be presented at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard during the school sports event. Athletes at this stage are living with physical, auditory, intellectual, psychiatric, visual or multiple disabilities and will face off in friendly competition.

Ball hockey

Played indoors, on gymnasium floors, ball hockey is derived from its icy counterpart, but as the name indicates, a ball is used instead of a puck.

Boccia

In demonstration last year, boccia is now officially part of the Défi sportif 2007 at the school sports event. Boccia, created specifically for people with cerebral palsy or some form of motor disability, is derived from the traditional game of bowls. It is a game of precision where each competitor attempts to direct 6 leather balls as close to the “jack” (white target ball) as possible. Boccia is played in gymnasiums by athletes who use wheelchairs for mobility. Rules permit the balls to be thrown by hand, by foot, or with the aid of a ramp that can be manipulated by an assistant if need be, though the assistant is required to turn his/her back to the playing area when doing so. Boys and girls form teams and are invited to compete against each other team. Boccia, part of the Paralympic slate of events for over 10 years now, requires concentration, strategy and coordination.

Soccer

Another school sport is the most popular on the planet : soccer! During each game of 15 minutes, two teams of eleven players try to direct a ball into the opponent’s net without using their hands or arms. Depending on the weather, matches are played both indoors and outdoors. When played indoors, handball nets are used instead of regular soccer nets.

Swimming

The swimming competition at The Défi sportif includes races of all categories covering distances from 25 to 200 metres. The scholastic sports event is designed to encourage participation, and toward that end youngsters are grouped according to age and gender.

Track and field

First of all, almost 400 youngsters will challenge during track and field. 15 events are scheduled, including throws, tosses, jumps, relay races, and even “walker” race.

Volleyball

Everyone knows what volleyball is : a sport with 2 teams of 6 players who use their hands to knock a ball over a net. For the school level matches, a large air-filled balloon is used, so it travels far more slowly.

Water polo

On Thursday morning, the water polo tournament takes place. This sport which is unquestionably growing in popularity has been introduced at the Défi sportif in 2001. Every student has to wear an aqua-jogging belt, regardless of their swimming abilities. The matches, similar to traditional water polo, are 8 minutes in duration. Teams may number up to 12 players, but only 7 may enter the water at one time for play, with 5 up front and, in order to cover as much space as possible, 2 in nets!
